Richard Blake Interview - 7.9.07
Favorite:
Movie:I have many favorites, but at the top of my list is definitely "Star Wars." I love all the "Star Wars" movies. Other favorites that come to mind are "Rounders," "Good Will Hunting," "Forrest Gump," and "Cool Hand Luke."
Television Show: On television now, it would have to be "24." Ever in existence, definitely "The Pretender."
Actor: Again, a few selections from a long list. Sean Patrick Flannery, Kevin Spacey and Shia LaBeouf.
Actress: Julianne Moore, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts.
Food: Italian food, in general.
Broadway show:It used to be "42nd Street" but now, I would have to say "Rent." Is that cliched?
Moment in "Legally Blonde": In the second act, when I get to be a jackass after I see Callahan and Elle kissing and Vivienne tells me to shut up. I love seeing if I can get a rise out of the audience.
Word: Plethora. I also really like ubiquitous and non sequitur.
Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Beverage: Alcoholic would be Michelob Ultar and non-alcoholic would definitely be Coke (although I am trying to cut down on it).
Lunch Meat: Ham.
If you strangle a Smurf, what color does it turn?
Caucasian.
Name three things you would take on a desert island.
My wife, Teri. A poker set, complete with a deck of cards. And a television.
What was the saddest closing show you ever did?
"Footloose" because I was leaving Teri.
How did you meet your wife, Teri?
We met when we were seven. We were dance camp rivals for four years. She won two competitions and I won two competitions. Then we met again doing "Footloose."
What's your biggest pet peeve?
Well, I have OCD, so I have hundreds of pet peeves. But my biggest would be a toss-up between open mouth cruching of potato chips and shoes...when people put their shoes on the wrong side. If the left shoe is on the right and the right shoe is on the left, it drives me crazy!
And what makes you really angry?
Child abuse. I just don't understand how anyone could do such a thing. And also, manipulation.
What was your favorite fan moment?
When I played on "The Wedding Singer" team for the Broadway Show League, some fans came to cheer us on and they made these signs. If you've ever seen those Chuck Norris facts (www.chucknorrisfacts.com), they took those facts and substituted my name in and I found it to be very funny and nice that these girls made me signs. It is definitely the moment that sticks out the most in my mind. I am very competitive, so it was nice to have something to smile at when we lost.
What was the worst job you ever had?
I never really had any jobs besides acting. I've been fortunate enough to be performing since I was young. I did try my hand at bartending when I was 21 or so, but that was more for the experience.
Who is your biggest role model?
My father.
What is your audition song?
"I'll Be" by Edwin McCain.
If you were a traffic sign, what would you be?
I would be more of a caution sign. "Hard Hat Area."
If you could be any other profession, what would you be?
A professional poker player or a cook.
So...you cook, you dance, you act, you sing...is there anything you don't do well?
Yes. The game at hte amusement park where you throw the rings and try to get them on the bottles. I suck at that. Seriously, there are more things I am not good at than I am good at...I just do my best not to let anyone see those things.
